If you want to know how a man of truthful nature and no-violent nature can do magic in the world; if you want to know how the bloodless movement of freedom of India was successfully administrated; you would certainly remember one name: Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi.

The Person

Born in India (1869), Mahatma Gandhi is a person who hardly needs any introduction. His teaching, his love for every person on the earth, and his unshakable faith in non-violence were the aspects, which has made him so unique person. He is believed to be the man of the millennium. The weapon of non-violence was used for the first time in the world. And it the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and his followers succeeded in making India a free nation.

Gandhi in south Africa

He had studied law in England. When he went to South Africa for practicing as a lawyer, he encountered the evils of apartheid regime there. As he had love for every being in his heart, he could not bear the rules and regulations practiced by the then British rulers of South Africa. He encouraged the people and conducted civil disobedience movement in South Africa. He was able get support of the local people, as his cause was noble and the modus operandi of work non-violent.

Freedom Movement of India and Gandhi

When he returned to India in the first decade of twentieth century, the movement of freedom of India was in the hands of the leaders like Gopal Krishna Gokhle and Pandit Motilal Nehru. Most of the leaders were of very senior in age. He met all the great leaders of the time and took their guidance. Within no time, M. K. Gandhi became a popular leader in India.

He was man of the masses; he was a saintly being. So was his charisma, such was his personality that the greatest warriors of the world felt powerless before his subtle smile of love and affection for the human race.

He fought against the rules and regulations of British Raj, but he never professed hatred against the British people ruling over India. His approach was very human. He believed that “One should not lose faith in humanity. The humanity is like a big ocean. Some of the drops in an ocean might be dirty, but that does not make the whole ocean dirty.”

Mahatma Gandhi is rightly known as father of the nation of India.

Investing in India has been a prime factor for the rise of the Indian economy in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) and vice-versa. Investment advisors who have been guiding investors on the prospects of favourable investments in India are quite optimistic. In such a trend quite evident lately, the private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) investments into India have been somewhat remarkable. This trend is further strengthening the confidence of all investors alike.

According to a recent report released by global consultancy Bain & Company, titled ‘India PE Report 2010′, there is renewed confidence among the leading global PE investors about the Indian market. Private equity and venture capital investments are projected to reach US$ 17 billion (around Rs 80,000 crore) this year owing to some strong impetus received from strong economic growth in the country. As per a study by Venture Intelligence, private equity firms have invested about US$ 2,364 million across 67 deals during the quarter ended June 2010.

Funds focused on Indian equity are becoming favourites with these global investors. Investment firm, Evolvence Capital, which is based out Dubai, announced its plan on July 21, 2010, to launch its third India-focussed fund - The Evolvence India Fund II - targeting to attract a corpus of US$ 400 million from institutional and high net worth clients globally. UAE national Khaled al-Muhairy, the Dubai-based alternative investments company, was also one of the first Gulf investment funds to embark on India as an investment destination during the pre-crisis period as the Gulf looked forward to surplus petro funds for investing in India.

Further, PE players have invested more than US$ 300 million in companies related to food processing, agri-based sectors during January-June 2010, as per a Grant Thorton report. In calendar year 2009, PE investments in these sectors were about US$ 398 million as against US$ 187 million in 2008 and US$ 4.3 million in 2007, respectively.

All these indicators signal the vociferous favour that India seems to have found from the PE investors. Private equity investments in India in May 2010 alone grew by almost 200 per cent as compared to the corresponding period last year. During the month of May, financial services, materials and healthcare segment were the most favoured sectors for PE funding. Major PE investments during May were in companies like Avinja Properties, National Stock Exchange, Fortis Healthcare and Pegasus Assets Reconstruction by PE firms such as Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co (KKR), Temasek Holdings’ and DE Shaw etc.

How WiMAX Will Deploy in Our Country - India
By Rakesh Kumar Jha

India started its economic liberalization program in 1991. In 1994, the first step to opening the telecom market to privatization was taken. The first private sector wire line and cellular licenses were issued in 1995. From then on, Indian telecom has seen several milestones crossed and many missteps that provided valuable lessons. The effective telecom tariff for domestic voice service has dropped from Rs 14 per minute (US$0.3 at US$1 = Rs 44.5) to about Rs 1 (US$0.02) per minute in the last 10 years. The result is that the number of telephone connections (wireline and wireless lines) has doubled in the past two years, to about 150 million. The Ministry of Telecom has set a target for 2007 of about 250 million connections and mobile coverage for 85% of the country’s geographical area, from about 30% today.India now has 49.75 million fixed subscribers and 100 million mobile users, for a total of about 150 million. That may seem like a large figure, but with a population of 1.08 billion, it translates to just 14 phones for every 100 people. And that number is skewed by the relative wealth of the cities while urban teledensity is around 31 percent, just 2 percent of the rural population has phone lines. With India’s expanding middle class, demand for telephone services is growing beyond carriers’ ability to keep up.The telecom ministry is initiating an ambitious project to release a total of about 45 MHz of spectrum from the Department of Defense to augment necessary spectrum for 3G services.

Although details are not yet available, the cost has been estimated at about US$225 million and the time frame is expected to be early 2010. With respect to rural connectivity, the government’s objective is to reach about 50 million rural connections, or one phone per three rural households, by 2007 and about 80 million rural connections, or one phone per two rural households, by 2010.

Broadband Access Anywhere

The two driving forces of modern Internet are broadband, and wireless. The systems based on Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 standards combine the two, delivering high-speed broadband Internet access over a wireless connection. The systems based on latest IEEE 802.16e standard will help in achieving the goal of “Broadband Access Anywhere”.

WiMAX Forum

The WiMAX Forum is an industry-led, non-profit corporation formed to help promote and certify the interoperability of broadband wireless products compliant with the IEEE 802.16 standards. The Forum’s goal is to accelerate global deployments of and grow the market for standards-based, interoperable, broadband wireless access solutions. The WiMAX Forum is working with member companies to develop standardized profiles and interoperable WiMAX products around specific spectrum bands. To date, there are over 368 member companies in the WiMAX Forum including, 136 service providers. The systems/CPEs based on IEEE 802.16 family of standards after certification for conformance and interoperability by WiMAX forum is called as WiMAX systems.

IEEE 802.16: Technology Overview

IEEE 802.16 is a family of standards designed to address the needs for Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMANs). There are currently two implementations being implemented for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems: 802.16-2004 commonly known as 802.16d OFDM based for fixed applications and 802.16e OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access) for mobile applications.

(i) IEEE 802.16-2004 OFDM Based (Generally called as 16d):

IEEE 802.16-2004 was released in June 2004 and contains a physical (PHY) and MAC layer specification for two key applications:

The most common implementations at this time are 256 OFDM for bandwidths below 10 MHz.

(ii) The IEEE 802.16e standard was finalized in December, 2005 and released in February, 2006. IEEE 802.16e Standard envisage enhancements designed to add a new Physical (PHY) and Media Access Control (MAC) layer for mobile Broadband Wireless Access (BWA). This standard is known as 802.16e - 2005 OFDMA and has also been referred to as 802.16e or Mobile Worldwide Interoperable Microwave Access Systems (WiMAX).

The expectations from mobile application of WiMAX are cellular-like mobility with higher bandwidth and lower costs as compared to 3G cellular systems. The evolving 802.16e OFDMA based systems are initially focusing on licensed bands in the 2 to 4 GHz range. The equipments have also been envisaged in the unlicensed 5 GHz band. Leading global companies are making significant R&D investments in 802.16e systems betting that it may become one of the key global standards for mobile broadband wireless access with end-to-end IP technology.

Background

Spectrum for WiMAX

WiMAX frequency bands and profiles for Certification - Initial plan:

(a) The frequency bands for the 802.16-2004 profiles: Profiles are a set of options of modulations, number of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) etc. given in IEEE standard. The WiMAX Forum certification working groups have finalized the initial certification profile for the first wave of WiMAX Forum Certified™ equipment (being called as Certification Wave 1 ‘CW1′) as below in following list:

List of First Wave” profiles

Freq Band(MHz)

Duplexing

Channelization (MHz)

TDD

10

(b) The frequency bands for the 802.16e-2005 profiles: The initial profile plan for certification against IEEE 802.16e - 2005 is shown in following list below:

WiMAX profiles showing TDD and FDD options for 2.5 GHz

Freq Band(MHz)

Duplexing

Channelization (MHz)

FDD

5.0/5.5

Note: Profiles are for PMP systems only and are for 256 OFDM

(c) WiMAX frequency bands and profiles for Certification - Current plan:

Recently WiMAX Forum collected data from the market and based on the survey, the tentative plan for certification against IEEE 802.16e-2005 under consideration.Till date WiMAX forum have not adopted 3.3-3.4 GHz band in its recommended profiles or in its roadmap of up to 2007 (only recently in a draft plan it is included and not yet formally approved due to lack of available manufacturer’s interest). This implies that protocol conformance testing and interoperability testing will be a key issue in 3.3-3.4 GHz band.

Summary of Key Issues

“Technology Neutral” or “16 d” or “16 e”:

Considering higher spectral efficiency, whether India is to adopt and deploy 802.16d based systems at all or not or may allow upto a certain time period say December, 2006. After a timeline say from 1st January 2007 only systems based on 802.16e should be mandatory. The worldwide operators and administrations are tracking 802.16e developments. The method to enforce a policy needs consideration.

Up gradation

If systems and CPEs are based on 802.16d, then whether they can be upgraded to 802.16e. Contradictory statements are being made by the industry.

Alignment of Spectrum

How to align our spectrum allocation to worldwide spectrum allocations. For this 2.5 GHz band, 2.3 GHz band and 700 MHz band may be thought alongwith 3.3-3.4 GHz and 3.4 - 3.6 GHz for IEEE 802.16e-2005 based systems. In U.S., 700 MHz band will be allocated in 2009 for which WiMAX society is also looking eagerly for possible deployment.

FDD or TDD or Both:

The frequency plan adoption should be based on FDD or TDD. Worldwide trend is for TDD.

Band Partitioning

Whether FDD and TDD mixed allocation within a band can be done or band is to be partitioned for FDD allocation and TDD allocation to minimize mutual interference.

Three Sector or Four Sector:

Typically three sector (three carriers or one carrier) and four sector (two carriers) working is possible. A three sector site may be deployed with different frequency carrier (total three carriers) in each sector or with same carrier in each sector (frequency reuse of 1case). Whether three sectors and frequency reuse of one should be made mandatory or it may be left to the operators considering spectral efficiency issue.

Guard Band

Whether any Guard band is required between carriers allocated to different operators.

Full Mobility and VoIP

Considering full mobility and VoIP application, there is a need to identify licensing and regulatory issues and to sort them out.

India started its economic liberalization program in 1991. In 1994, the first step to India started its economic liberalization program in 1991. In 1994, the first step to opening the telecom market to privatization was taken. The first private sector wireline and cellular licenses were issued in 1995.

The Ministry of Telecom has set a target for 2009 of about 350 million connections and mobile coverage for 85% of the countries geographical area, from about 30% today.

India now has 59.75 million fixed subscribers and 125 million mobile users, for a total of about 200 million. That may seem like a large figure, but with a population of 1.18 billion, it translates to just 14 phones for every 100 people. And that number is skewed by the relative wealth of the cities - while urban teledensity is around 31 percent, just 2 percent of the rural population has phone lines. With India’s expanding middle class,

demand for telephone services is growing beyond carriers’ ability to keep up.The telecom ministry is initiating an ambitious project to release a total of about 45 MHz of spectrum from the Department of Defense to augment necessary spectrum for 3G services. Although details are not yet available, the cost has been estimated at about

US$400 million, and the time frame is expected to be early 2009.With respect to rural connectivity, the government’s objective is to reach about 50 million rural connections, or one phone per three rural households, by 2009 and about 120 million rural connections, or one phone per two rural households, by 2010.

Broadband Market

Broadband services were launched in India in 2007. ADSL services now cover 300 towns with a combined 1.5 million connections, while broadband wireless subscriber figures are still negligible. While low broadband penetration is a clear opportunity for BWA/WiMAX, the market take off will require sufficient spectrum, very low cost CPE and affordable end-to-end connectivity, including the computing platform. A country where broadband’s average revenue per user (ARPU) is estimated at US$8-10 requires very low equipment cost. In fact, Huawei is already delivering DSL modems at US$13 to Indian operators. The Indian telecom sector operates in a volume-driven market. If the broadband market in India grows to meet the government’s revised targets, it might spur one of the world’s largest broadband wireless markets. For example, target broadband connections have been currently revised to 15 million subscribers by 2009 and 20 million by 2010. Quite likely the majority of these will be wireless broadband connections because of the poor wireline infrastructure in place.

BWA/WiMAX Regulation

Enough operators are complaining about lack of adequate radio spectrum, that the government is considering the release of some of the spectrum held by the departments of Space and Defense. Currently, license holders in the 3.3-3.4 GHz band have on average, a spectrum of 2×6 MHz to deploy broadband services, even though an

analysis shows that 20 MHz is the minimum to support wide scale deployments and hence a profitable business case. At the end of June 2006, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) initiated a public consultation on “Allocation and pricing of spectrum for 3G services and broadband wireless access” including WiMAX. This consultation, in which the WiMAX Forum is keen to participate, and we know price has been finalized in mid June 2009. Further pressure on available bandwidth is coming from operators who require allocations of the 3G/UMTS spectrum. BWA/WiMAX technologies require specific frequency bands to be opened up in the 3.5 GHz band (an internationally approved standard), which is currently allocated to the Department of Space for INSAT downlink.

Regulators and policy makers are deciding the best way to manage the spectrum.

BWA/WiMAX Activity

Bharti TeleVentures, Reliance, SIFY, BSNL and VSNL (Tata Group) have all acquired licenses in 3.3 GHz range and are in various stages of trials. VSNL has announced Phase 1 pre-WiMAX deployment of Aperto gear in 60 locations, extending to 200 locations within the year. Although there is clearly insufficient spectrum to offer DSL-like service, several operators have indicated that there is still a huge market for 64 and 128 kb/s connections, which should alleviate the lack of spectrum. Other active players include utilities and several branches of the Indian government. Intel is making significant progress in working closely with the Indian Government in

bringing the latter’s rural broadband goals to reality. The innovative “village entrepreneur” model, together with a net-enabled community info-kiosk, is an ideal way to reach the many who are not yet connected. While Motorola is strengthening its presence in the hinterlands through its extensive BWA projects for state governments,Alcatel has set up a joint venture with the C-Dot (the R&D arm of the DoT) to focus on exclusive BWA/WiMAX solutions that are tailor made for India at price points the Indian consumer is comfortable paying.

Anticipated Developments

Several key events should influence the Indian BWA/WiMAX environment in the months ahead. While most operators have only conducted limited trials of vendor products, we expect larger deployments to begin in January 2009, provided that the needed additional spectrum is made available as envisioned. The mobile industry, already faced with a steep decrease in voice ARPU, is expanding its reach by offering voice services in rural areas and high-margin data services in urban areas in order try to increase revenues. Mobile TV, IPTV and other broadband

applications are under trial at Reliance, Bharti and MTNL. The increased level of eCommerce activity - mainly through travel bookings, discount airfares, holiday destination packages, job hunting and matrimonial services - is creating a huge demand for always-on broadband services that is expected to take the current Internet user population to 150 million before 2009.Government-led initiatives with strong technology partners such as Intel, Motorola and Alcatel will trigger successful applications such as the Railtel cyber-cafe network along the entire rail route of the nation. Local technology-product companies with differentiated products engineered in India will have an opportunity to deploy in large domestic networks, learn from the experience and go global. Thus, they could form the first-generation Indian telecom product companies to address global markets. The mobile-content industry in India is on the threshold of great change, as television, production houses and content aggregators are working frantically to define the new frontier in the Indian content business. Mobile operators and ISPs that have strong alliances with content developers will be able to define the content-licensing model, which is at the heart of the broadband business. This will pose a new challenge for Indian service providers. Although the Indian broadband arena is emerging, it clearly offers huge potential for those that can demonstrate perseverance, patience and commitment.

Market Forecasts

In 2009, the BWA equipment market opportunity was a mere US$10 million, dominated by small deployments for backhaul applications to enterprises with outdoor equipment. However, we believe that with the upcoming spectrum opening, the certification of new equipment and lower-cost CPEs, the annual 3.3 and 3.5 GHz equipment opportunity will increase from US$4 million in 2009 to US$300 million in 2012.This report projects an accumulated 18 million BWA subscribers by 2012,counting both residential and business segments. WiMAX subscribers should represent two-thirds of this figure. Approximately 60% of the WiMAX subscribers will be mobile customers who are predominately residential, while fixed WiMAX will continue to be driven by large corporations and, to a lesser extent, by SME customers.

IMF Forecast For 2010 - India GDP Upgraded
By Archana Debnath

International Monetary Fund (IMF) has now corroborated what I have been maintaining for quite some time. IMF has upgraded India’s GDP forecast of year 2010 from 8.8% to 9.4%. And on the other hand, IMF has indicated that US poses the greatest threat to global recovery. In fact as per IMF it is India and China and some other Asian economies which are supposed to lift the growth prospects in the world and therefore it has raised the world GDP prospects for 2010 from 4.2% to 4.5%. However it has lowered its growth estimates for Euro zone, Canada, US, Japan, and emerging economies.

If we consider expected growth rate of different economies of the world, India ranks second behind China. According to IMF, while India’s GDP is expected to grow at the rate of 9.4%, China’s GDP is fore estimated to grow at 10.5% for year 2010. This is wonderful news for Indian economy, and should lift the global investors’ confidence and investment sentiments towards India.

In case immediate steps to create jobs to boost consumerism are not taken, US will witness a double dip depression. Fundamentally, steps have to be taken to rein in fiscal deficit and follow frugal monetary policies to avoid double dip recession. Technically speaking, chart of Dow Jones is indicating that there will be revisit of levels of 6400 which will be akin to double dip in US stock markets. On the other hand Indian markets will correct with US markets to some extent, but will rebound aggressively to surpass their all time highs in a year’s time. That would in essence mean that the process of decoupling has begun. Alongwith India you can also see other emerging economies do well, provided they are not heavily dependent on exports to US.

Countries heavily dependent on US exports have an attendant problem, apart from their own national economic problems in a world going through credit crunch. Since the beginning of this credit crisis in 2008, US has done next to nothing to bolster their jobs market. Unemployment data suggest that more and more people are being shown the pink slip in US. If unemployment and under employment is high then consumption will be low. And if consumption is low then there will be even less production, necessitating even less jobs. Thus goes the vicious cycle of low employment. So in such scenario do you believe that US will increase its import? In fact there will be shrinking of US imports, and that will hurt the countries whose GDP is heavily dependent on exports to US.

In times ahead, Global Investors are going to look at these forecasts from IMF to decide on global destinations to park their money. And India growth story merits serious attention!!

As the clocks all over New Delhi continue the countdown, Delhi and India await anxiously for arguably the biggest sporting event hosted by India. It has been a hot topic of gossip among Delhites and as the moment finally approaches, it is time that we take a look at the various notable happenings leading to this worldwide phenomenon.

The journey to Commonwealth Games 2010 has not been a smooth one, it obviously has got its share of controversies tagged to itself. Whether its the collapse of Metro-rail Bridges, or the lagging in constructions all over Delhi, deaths of workers at sites and unprepared venues, all of these things did take the CWG2010 preparations through a roller coaster ride. But now at last, as the fine tuning is on its way, the venues declared, the arrangements made, the security threats cleared and the final stages of ticket-sales have commenced, it is more than safe to say that New Delhi is ready to welcome the whole world and put up an unforgettable show.

Speaking of show, the opening ceremony which, the whole world has set its eyes upon, will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. Experts in performing arts are preparing to put up a great show, and the event itself will be attended by a number of world leaders and delegates. The event, to be held on 3rd October, 2010 will mark the beginning of the XIXth Commonwealth Games. On that day, the Queen’s Baton relay, which left the Buckingham Palace on the 29th October, 2009 will reach the Opening ceremony. The Baton, a symbol of world peace and harmony between the commonwealth games has toured the world since then.

Spreading the message of the Games is the official mascot, Shera, a tiger (Sher in Hindi meaning Tiger) who has always been covered by the media. Shera has been all over Delhi, interacting with students in the famed Delhi university, and taking closer look at the venues. It has become synonymous to Commonwealth Games 2010 with the Delhites.

The Official sporting events will begin the next day, on the 4th October, 2010 in six venue clusters and five stand-alone venues. Also, 26 new training venues are being constructed. The venues include some important stadiums like Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Major Dhyanchand Stadium among others.

There will be 17 sports majorly, and 72 countries will participate in the games. The highest number of sportsmen being sent are from Australia and England, apart from the host country, India. Also, India’s home-grown sports - Kabaddi, will also be a demonstration sports in the games. The Indian government has arranged for the stay of all participants and delegates at the Games Village, at Khel Gaon and at the Ashoka Hotel, which has been named the official family hotel for the games.

With all the massive preparations, it has to be seen whether the Games can go smoothly, hoisting India’s name as one of the best host-nations for world class sporting events. As New Delhi gears up for the biggest event in India, we can only hope for the best experience for everybody.

The Death Penality in India
By Madan G Singh

The British ruled India for 200 years and they must take credit for giving India a civil and criminal code. Before the arrival of the British there was hardly any criminal code and decisions were made on the spur of the moment or a vague reference to the Shariat as India was ruled by the Moslem’s.

The criminal law as enacted under the Indian penal code has the death sentence as one of the punishments. There is however a small rider in the form of the Supreme Court ruling given a few years back that the death sentence is to awarded only in the ‘rarest of rare cases’

India after it gained independence from Britain retained the death penalty in the statute books. But despite this punishment being in the legal system the death sentence has been carried only at rare intervals. In fact the last hanging took place in 2005.

The recent award of the death penalty to the perpetrators of the Bombay blasts after 6 years and the award of death by hanging to the lone terrorist captured during the 26/11 attack is a case that needs elucidation. In addition there is the disconcerting news that here are over 300 people on death row in India and their cases are “in process”.

It is worth to point out that in the United States there were 53 executions during the same period. But in India the execution of death warrant is a time consuming process and the executions are postponed again and again. It does not help that almost all terrorists death sentience’s have not been carried out for reason’s that are not strictly legal.. Thus Afzal Guru the master mind of the attack on parliament remains on death row for more than 10 years. Contrast with the swift executions of the Sikhs involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1989.

It must be remembered that the survival of a nation depends on actions that establish the rule of law as well as acts as a warning to others. Keeping this in mind it is desirable to carry out the executions. But there is a problem and it cannot be brushed under the carpet. There is certainly some element of fear that the executions may hurt the psyche of the minority community. Again a fresh look at the death sentence itself is called for, as it is not desirable to keep a convict on death row for years and years. It is perhaps worse than a swift execution.

Festivals of India - Sri Rama Navami
By Sangeetha Atul

Last article, we saw the New year Ugadi. Now we shall see the first festival after Ugadi i.e. the Sri Rama Navami. This festival is about the birthday celebrations of Lord Ram. As Navami stands for number 9 in Sanskrit, this festival comes exactly after 9 days of Ugadi. There is a story behind the celebrations. It seems long long ago, King Dasharatha who was ruling the Kosala kingdom had 3 wives - Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumithra. He had everything that a king would envy for except children. Those days it was a practice to perform yagnas or rituals with offerings to the Fire God, Agni Deva. So, as suggested by the Gurus, King Dasharatha decided to perform the Putrakameshti Yagna or the ritual which would give him children. As a rich king would do it, Dasharatha performed the yagna with great fervor and Agni, pleased with his offerings came out of fire and blessed him with a pot of a sweet preparation. He also said that the magic pot with the sweet preparation would help him achieve his desired wish. King Dasharatha was very happy to have the pot and he rushed it to his wives who were equally happy to receive it. Now, here Dasharatha had his brains running cleverly and distributed the sweet equally to his wives Kausalya and Kaikeyi only. He intentionally left Sumithra out of the share and left everybody wondering because as they knew Sumithra was his wife dearest.

Kausalya and Kaikeyi on hearing that Sumithra never got a share, offered to share their portion of the share equally. They both did this separately and hence Sumithra got 50% of the sweet - 25% from Kausalya and 25% from Kaikeyi. This is what Dasharatha wanted probably as he was able to secure majority of the sweet for his dearest wife without annoying the elder 2 wives. It was a practice in olden days that kings marry as many as 4 times in order to build a great empire and a great successor. Now that his wives consumed the sweet, accordingly in due course of time (the day when the Punarvasu star shined) they gave birth to four children Rama, Bharata, Laxmana and Shatrughna. Now Kausalya gave birth to Rama, Kaikeyi to Bharata, and Sumithra gave birth to Laxmana and Shatrughna because that was the proportion in which they consumed the sweet - Kausalya 25%, Kaikeyi 25% and Sumithra - 25%+25%=50%. And they all lived happily because the king, his wives and his subjects got all what they wanted.

It is believed that Lord Ram is the giver of everything in life.

He is the Maryadaa Purushottam meaning the ideal Man. There is nobody better than him. He is also

Ekabani - meaning with a single sure shot of arrow he is kills the enemy

Ekapatni vratastha - meaning eternally wedded and devoted to a single wife and

Ekavachani - meaning he won’t go back on his words whatever may happen.

Sri Rama Taaraka mantra

Sri Rama Rama Rameti - is the mantra to be uttered or written one crore or 10 million times and it is believed that it will fulfil one’s wish whatever it may be.

Now coming back to celebrations, the previous day of Rama Navami, to mark the eagerness of waiting for a baby, people prepare cooking items supposed to be only eaten by the pregnant ladies without much oil, spices etc.

The next day once Lord SriRam is born, they celebrate the cradling ceremony by symbolically decorating a lemon, cradling and naming it. I think the joy that comes with it and the knowledge that is shared with the children or next generation is more important than the rituals. That is why in olden times men and women knew most of the things about the diet during pregnancy, precautions to be taken by pregnant ladies in handling household work etc. These days since there are no joint families and people are opting for nuclear families, it has become a common practice to depend only on the doctors or midwives for any routine or emergency condition of pregnancy.

Because of this dependency, the problems associated with parenting, child nutrition also have increased several manifolds. That is why probably the old people say - OLD IS GOLD.

So, go grab the telephone/email/snail mail, make that call to your parents, grand-parents who will be more than happy to talk to you. Make them happy who used to get happy seeing you when you were small.

In 119 ODIs played between Pakistan and India, their trans-border rivals have dominated India with a 69-46 win loss record.

But in World Cups, the story has been radically different.

The sides met for the first time in a World Cup, in 1992, in Australia. Pakistan won that World Cup, but the India-Pakistan rivalry has often been considered as big as the World Cup itself.

The match at Sydney began well for India with Azharuddin winning the toss and electing to bat. The Indian team got 216 in a match reduced to 49 overs owing to a slow over rate by Pakistan.

Chasing a modest total, Pakistan were all out for 173, slipping from a dominant 105/2. Manoj Prabhakar, Kapil Dev and Srinath got two wickets apiece.

Four years later, Bangalore was a bigger stage with tens of thousands rooting for the hosts. The teams were playing for a place in the semi-final, against Sri Lanka.

Again, India won the crucial toss and piled up 287 on the back of Sidhu’s 93. Pakistan fell short by 39 runs after looking threatening at 113/1, at a stage.

India’s win in Manchester in 1999 again underscored why the India-Pakistan rivalry is viewed as a separate event in its own right, and as large as the world Cup itself.

This was a tournament that saw India exit after the Super Six stage, while Pakistan advanced to the final, where they lost to the eventual winners, Australia.

India batted first, yet again, and their 227 was enough on a seaming wicket on which Venkatesh Prasad’s five-for ensured that Pakistan were all out for 180.

Then came the 2003 Pool A match, where Pakistan got to bat first and were helped to 273 by Saeed Anwar’s ton. But the total was about 30 runs short on a batting wicket, and the opening partnership of 53 in 29 balls on the back of a rampaging Sehwag was a precursor of things to come.

Tendulkar went on to play what is regarded as his finest innings at any World Cup, and although he fell for 98, Dravid shepherded the team home in the company of Yuvraj.

That was the last match between the sides in a World Cup. So, there we are, India versus Pakistan in World Cups: India 4, Pakistan 0.

Will 2011 be any different, or more of the same? I can’t wait to find out.
